Probably the most prestigious insitute to study abroad in Italy, The Umbra Institute was founded in 1999 in cooperation with Arcadia University and offers semester, summer, and year-long study abroad programs for American and Italian university students. The Institute is located in the historic center of Perugia on the grandiose Piazza IV Novembre where it occupies the main floors of a fifteenth-century monastery and the cloisters of the centuries-old Duomo di San Lorenzo.

The General Studies Program is the most flexible option for semester students at the Umbra Institute. Students choose freely from a vast variety of elective courses taught in English. Participants may also create curricular concentrations in a given area. All students are required to take an Italian language course as part of their curriculum and be enrolled in full-time study, usually from 14 to 16 credits.
